How to Defrost Car Windows in Winter: Quick and Effective Tips

By Akmal, Grand Repair Auto ·

Winter mornings often bring frost-covered car windows, turning your morning commute into a hassle. If you’ve ever struggled to clear your windscreen before hitting the road, you’re not alone. Fortunately, there are effective ways to defrost your car windows quickly and safely.

1. Start your car and let it warm up

The simplest method is to let your car’s heating system do the work:

  • Start the engine: switch on the car and turn the defroster to the highest setting. Set the air to fresh air, not recirculation.
  • Increase the temperature gradually: begin with cool air to avoid cracking the glass, then slowly increase the temperature to warm the interior and melt the frost.

2. Use a de-icer spray

You can buy a commercial de-icer or make your own:

  • Mix two parts rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) with one part water in a spray bottle.
  • Add a few drops of washing-up liquid for better coverage.

Spray the solution directly onto the frosted windows. The alcohol lowers the freezing point of water, melting the frost almost instantly.

3. Scrape it off

  • Choose the right tool: a good-quality ice scraper with a sturdy handle and a sharp plastic blade.
  • Scrape gently: start from the edges and work towards the centre. Never use metal objects — they scratch the glass.

4. Prevent frost the night before

  • Cover your windscreen: a windscreen cover, old blanket or piece of cardboard stops frost forming.
  • Vinegar spray: three parts vinegar to one part water, sprayed the night before, helps prevent frost building up.

5. Use your car’s technology

  • Heated windscreens: some cars have heating elements built into the windscreen — use them.
  • Remote start or pre-heating: if your car has it, start warming the cabin from indoors.

6. Avoid these mistakes

  • Hot water on the windscreen: never. The sudden temperature change can crack the glass.
  • Sharp objects: knives or metal tools will scratch or damage your windows.

7. Stay prepared

Keep these in your car through winter:

  • Ice scraper and brush
  • De-icer spray
  • A microfibre cloth for condensation
  • Gloves
